Lord of the Rings Campaign - Watcher in the Water

Continuing our Ringbearer campaign it was time to play the battle outside the doors of Moria.

Matt had bought and painted the Watcher model (a pig to put together and a bit rough apparently) I thought it looked great. I made a Mirrormere using a lino floor tile and some yacht varnish.

It all looked rather splendid.

With Frodo in position and the rest of the Fellowship trying to open the door the game began...

Frodo, look out!

Nom, nom, nom.

The beast raced forward, shot Frodo, pulled him in to the water and then ate him before the rest of the good guys could move.
Oh.

Quite a bit of prep-work, a great looking set up and all over in the first turn.

So, figuring maybe we'd done something wrong we set up again and had another go.

Again the creature dragged Frodo into the water, but less good dice meant the hobbit survived.

Seizing the initiative the ringbearer legged it into the shallows.

Gandalf wrought his magic and stopped the Watcher from moving. Legolas and Aragorn started shooting arrows, to little effect.

Meanwhile the hobbits ran in to the mines.

Gimli waved his huge chopper about.

The foul beast closed in on the elf.

Seeing the creature tangling up their companion the rest of the Fellowship legged it for the gates, leaving the poor elf to his fate.

In the end a relatively straightforward victory for the good forces.

We were both a bit disappointed with the scenario. Seems like either the creature gets lucky early on and kills the hobbit or otherwise the combined forces of the Fellowship make it all too easy for five of them to get away. Given the effort we'd put into it it wasn't that good a game.

To make things worse I'd not packed the scenery for the next game, so we couldn't even get on with that one.

Not to worry though, all scheduled in for Balin's Tomb next week.
