Midgard: Wars of the Roses, Second Battle of St Albans

James and Chris came over to refight another big Wars of the Roses set piece, Second St. Albans.

I filmed the events and created a video

I also took a large number of pictures, some of which I'll share here.
James had worked out a simple scenario and forces. We join the battle as the Lancastrians emerge from the town and fall on the flank of Warwick's men who had entrenched themselves expecting an attack from the north.

The Lancastrians had encountered some Yorkist archers entering the town, so I had to roll to see if I'd taken casualties.
I rolled very badly, which felt ominous...

Fortunately Warwick's men were still facing the wrong way

My brave lads pushed on toward their exposed flank.

Still Warwick expected an attack from the north!

Soon the trap was sprung and in a panic the Yorkists tried to reorganise their lines.

Clifford's men led the way.

But York arrows were finding their mark

The powerful and expensive cannon were pointing at an enemy that never came.

As panic grips the forces of York they manage to form up defensively.

Lancastrian arrows fly overhead.

At last battle is joined. Yorkist Men at Arms rush forward to try to turn the tide.

But the forces of Lancaster are pushing them back.

Blue and White clad fores loyal to the King head for the tents to search for their sovereign.

Brave Yorkists face the wrath of the Percy family.

The red rose is everywhere pushing back the white.

Warwick himself is at bay as the enemy closes in.

What a terrific game, with a pretty historical outcome.
Being caught in the flank means it was always going to be tough for Warwick, but the game remained close until the end.

Flush with excitement there's talk of Towton next (though I have an urge to fight Ferrybridge too)!

Here's a few more phone pictures.

  1. An interesting scenario. The wintry trees give the action a sombre look. The Midgard markers are a reminder what a good set they are. I must have another game with them soon.

  2. I enjoyed the photos and report. I was a bit unsure about watching the video as sometimes the cameras are swung around so you get a blurred view and sea sickness but I enjoyed that too and the fuller picture of what happened.
What were the numbers of reputation points at the beginning and did the scenario make a difference to how many were allotted to Warwick?
The idea of not letting the defenders have a second move option on the first turn was a good one but they were still largely able to react in time. If that had extended into the second turn they would have been in more trouble but perhaps that would make the scenario too one sided.
I'm amazed the gunners were still there at the end.
