On Saturday Stephen and I joined with sixteen other gamers to play a narrative Old World event depicting the attempts of the Dwarfs to recapture Khazid Vosk from it's current Greenskin occupants. We'd all play single games in the morning that would impact on a pair of huge mass battles in the afternoon that would decide the fate of the hold.
Originally Stephen and I were both planning to take our Greenskin forces - I was on the point of buying a Mangler Squig to really bulk out the Night Goblins. However numbers were a bit imbalanced and so, having a pretty large Dwarf collection I volunteered to join the other side. I was hoping to get some warm-up games in beforehand but life conspired against me, so it turned out my first and second ever Old World games using the Dwarfs would be at the event!
To further complicate matters some last minute Dwarf drop-outs meant I was going to start the day playing a "last stand" affair where my single army had to hold out for as long as possible against two entire other forces!
But like a proper stoical Dwarf I rolled up my sleeves and, with an appropriate level of grumbling, got on with it!
The Groznog Throng assembles
Squigs bound in to view
Yellow ones - more cowardly!
The jaws of the trap close as the Dwarfs heft their axes.
I was hoping the much vaunted Dwarf artillery would rip a hole in the greenskins, but it was not to be - a combination of misfires and low dice rolls counting against me.
The Night Goblins were frenzied, apparently!
Magic rained down and I could do little to stop it
But the Ironbreakers held fast
Some of the Goblins were delayed, but as they arrived in chariots, they soon caught up
Inevitably fanatics went whirling away...
....but what's this, with a mighty flash an inspiring figure appears!
Grombrindal! Dismaying his enemies and heartening the Dwarfs.
Sadly The White Dwarf only held things up momentarily and the Wyvern was soon munching on Organ Gun grew.
The Night Goblins were also dealing with the Flame Cannon
Wolf riders fell on the Quarellers - but any Dwarf is a match for a spindly gobbo - even one riding a wolf!
The core Dwarf force remained intact, but things were closing in
Recovering from the appearance of the White Dwarf the frenzied mob of Night Goblins raced home
The handgunners were outmatched
The Night Goblins didn't fancy taking on the Longbeards solo and were grateful of some oversized help
The venerable Dwarfs went down swinging but were no match for the two monsters
Gleefully the rampant greenskins fell on the Ironbreakers
Caught in a terrible press!
Still the Quarrellers held out
Spitefully at the end the Greenskins turned on one another!
That's a sight to gladden Dwarf hearts!
In the end I lasted until turn six but couldn't quite complete the victory consitions.
Another entry in the Groznog Book of Grudges.
Great fun game though, despite the odds being against me
