Warhammer 8th Edition Dwarfs v Goblins

Steve and I had a brief window of opportunity (before the heavy drinking began) on New Year's Eve for a quick game of soldiers.
And what better way to see out 2018 than with a game of the best of all games - Warhammer?

So 1500 points with the funny diagonal set up.

Neither of us thought about it very much. I wanted a giant but the points looked slim and anyway I reasoned he'd just end up as a 200 point shot magnet. So I dropped him. I did take a rock lobber, imagining they were much better than they actually are and Boar Boys because they're lovely (even if they're bobbins in 8th)

Steve has a large and eclectic selection of dwarf models to choose from. This time he took some old models that presumably have at some time been allies of his Nordland Empire, resplendent in blue and yellow.

Some more recent, but still venerable Iron Breakers and a lord on Shield.

The second lot of plastic dwarfs - these armed with crossbows.

He also had a flame cannon (yikes!) assorted Slayers and the really old Goblobber.

Tactics be damned, the game started and I ran at the dwarfs. They stayed true to type and stood still and shot.

Shortly my speedy cavalry ensnared the slayers in the woods and handed it out to them. Tragically despite killing most of them, they have a special rule that means as they die they get to try and kill you - which proved very successful on the poor old boar boys.

A single slayer was left standing roaring his defiance!

Over in the centre the Iron Breakers saw a chance and surged forward as fast as their tiny little legs would let them.

The clan dwarfs then crashed into the remaining boars. A combat I had lost before it even began.

Kunnin' Orcy manuverin' had left the flame cannon out of position, so it was being pushed around in back field.

The Dwarf Lord challenge and Gruzzkupp accepted - "cos dats wots right an' proppa".

It's worth pointing out that for all it being a "personal challenge" that the Dwarf Lord throws out - he does have the two blokes with him to fight as well. Three on to one. So much for Dwarven honour!

Anyway they killed Gruzzkup a bit.

Then in the next round of combat they broke the Big 'Uns who ran away.

The dwarf pursuit unleashed some fanatics. Who fell short. Sigh.

Some crossbow shots panicked Da Bloo Moonz who ran into the swamp.

And with that it was all over and the Dwarf hold was safe.

I do like Warhammer. We should play it more often.

Trying to decide what to paint for 2019. Probably time to properly make an attempt to finish off the Empire army.
