40k 10th edition Orks v Templars

The Gaming Heir emerged from retirement for a game of 40k.

We grabbed the assorted GW freebies from their website (rules, army lists and points values are all available to download, though they are scattered across a series of pages) and using the Quick Start rules gave 40K a spin. 500 points, not using the CPs, straight stand up fight.

Da Boys line up.

The wartorn desert planet

The Dreadnought Brother Waldkrauz guarded one flank.

Whilst Templar Brethren held the centre.

Waaagh!

An early Ork Rokkit had a nasty effect (we may have played this first one wrong)

Brother Waldkrauz was mobbed by Nobz.

And with a well-timed Waaagh Klan Gruzzkupp surged home.

Marine Krak took out a few boyz

The NObz dealt with Brother Waldkrauz took on some Boyz.

But more lurked in reserve.

The big fight in the middle decided things - the two commanders killed each other, but Orky weight of numbers saw the Templars dragged down and stomped. Only a badly damaged Dread remained when we called it.

40K is a very silly and needlessly complicated system. Seemingly *every* rule and role has a potential modifier - all great fun to remember and apply when you're fourteen I guess, just infuriatingly hard to do when you're Old and Grey. For instance in a turn when you've called a Waaagh, *every* roll in the Combat Phase you make with your Orks is modified, Attacks, to Hit, to Wound are all improved - it the Warboss is leading them there's another modifier too. The end result is that it feels like the winner is likely to be the person who best knows and remembers to use all their special modifier rules - that the "game" is a test of remembering mechanics and rules rather than of tactics. But I'm not (and haven't been for many years) the target market for this.
On the whole I'd much rather play Xenos Rampant.

Ériu, Goddess of Ireland

Bought this model on a whim a while ago because it's lovely. Half a plan to use her for Of Gods and Mortals.

Lord of the Rings Wood Elves

The Lothlorien game needed some wood elves I have some that I painted a while ago but I'd loaned them to a friend for an RPG session she was running, so I had an excuse to rummage in the Lead and Plastic pile to find some more. I painted twelve and then asked General Ballroom how many we needed, to be informed it was just six. Then I got the others back. So now I have eighteen Wood Elves.

First up some metal ones from long ago. Predating the hobbit film. Lovely Perry sculpts, though a bit monopose.

Then some of the later Perry plastics.

Even allowing for the differences and limitations of the materials these plastic ones feel a bit "phoned in".

Still jolly nice little models and pretty quick and easy to paint up.

Lord of the Rings Campaign: Flight to Lothlorien

General Ballroom and I got back together to continue the campaign.

When last you left us the Balrog had chased the Fellowship out of Moria - without needing to kill Gandalf who had failed to survive the previous game. Pippin too had fallen into darkness, Legolas had made a near miraculous recovery on repeat occasions and even the Ringbearer was only on a single wound. A battered and bruised Fellowship indeed.

Anyway in this scenario the Fellowship have to make it into the safety of Lothlorien, where Galadriel will make them all better and give them a nice rest. That is, if the wargs don't get them.

The goblins made for the ford, hot on the heels of Legolas and Gimli.

Some of the Moria residents fancied a dip.

The Fellowship decided to send Merry running off down the flank - presumably as some sort of distraction.

"Yeah mate, you go that way, we'll look after Sam and Frodo, What? Yeah course it's safe"

"Quick, this way while the goblins go after Brandybuck!"

Pretty soon the bulk of the goblins were across the river.

A lone goblin raced after Merry.

Two of his fellows emerged somewhat damp from the river, only a couple were swept off to their doom.

"Come back here, you hairy footed little bleeder!"

The goblins poured after Legolas and Gimli whilst wolves began to appear on the flanks. (The rules say they can appear on *any* edge, but having them pop out of the woods the good guys were running towards seemed pretty unlikely, you'd kind of expect the ekves to deal with that sort of thing, so we stuck with flanks and the starting edge)

Legolas turned to fire at the pursuers.

Woof, woof, woof!

The trap was closing.

Aragorn however proved more than capable of breaking the necks of wargs.

The elf and dwarf found themselves being circled.

Aragorn: also handy at murdering goblins.

Legolas began to regret turning round for a few shots.

There were wargs and goblins everywhere!

Suddenly Haldir and his elven chums appeared from the woods!

They began to massacre the evil forces.

The Wild Warg Chieftain managed to get to the Ringbearer.

But Gimli was on hand.

The goblins tried to drag down the elves.

Boromir called a heroic fight and slew the wolf he was fighting *and* the Warg Chieftain. Frodo was safe...

Or was he?

The Moria goblin captain pulled the same trick, murdered Legolas and then ran over to Frodo and, using his remaining might point slew him too!

Victory to the forces of evil, mwahahahahaha!

In retrospect I'm not sure the Goblin Captain can do a heroic fight. Gen. B. and I are a little old and used to previous versions, so may have got that wrong. However it was suitably cinematic and makes no difference in the end. Frodo rolled to stay alive and he'll be back to full strength after a rest in an elven bed.

Legolas, however is now permanently dead (finally a 1 was rolled after three of four games where he'd been killed and then rolled to recover).

The rising death count will make the Ambush at Amon Hen scenario extra tricky for the good guys, but after that's over it's mainly just Sam and Frodo (with added Gollum) for the remaining games, so it won't be too much of a handicap.

Orlanthi

For reasons I can't quite fathom I am semi-obsessed with Glorantha and Runequest at the moment. I loved RQ in my youth and had loads of the supplements, even though we can't have played more than a half dozen actual games.

Anyway the new version looks cool but I'm unlikely ever to play it as an RPG. So I have instead been thinking about some tabletop gaming in the setting. Perhaps Sellswords and Spellslingers might work?

Anyway all this led me to grab some of the Warlord Games Celt sprues I've had for years and a few other spare plastic bits and fettle some Orlanthi.

A young warrior with an axe and shield from the Gripping Beast Picts.

Sword from the Oathmark skeletons and another GB shield. Possibly a Humakti.

Two axes from the GB kit along with a Pict head. Definitely a Storm Bull worshiper.

A spear thane, shield from the Oathmark skeletons.

Will go for a quick and dirty Contrast paint job on these and see if the muse stays with me.
