James, Martin and Chris all came around to the Sherwood Soldier Shack for a War of the Roses game using James' Midgard rules. Play-testing various things, including canon and a slightly tweaked turn sequence.
The scenario was (very) loosely based on Barnet - minus the fog.
After some initial maths based confusion about the number of units available we got ourselves set up. James and I in command of the Lancastrians - slightly undermanned waiting for Oxford and others to turn up. Martin and Chris had the Yorkists, including Eddie the King.
Lancastrians bar the road to Boggy Bottom
The Yorkists assemble
The King!
The guns await their chance
The Yorkists get mired in the Boggy Brook
The Lancastrian archers unleash an arrow storm
Before retiring behind the bills
The Yorkist cavalry, somewhat rashly, leads the way
Accompanied by some archers - whose bill are lagging behind
More archers contact the gonnes
Soon the whole line is engaged
The Lancastrian reinforcements arrive in time to secure the right flank.
Montague is bypassed and his billmen run down
The Lancastrian centre throws back the initial Yorkist charge.
Warwick makes sure he's close to the scurrers in case he needs to make a swift exit
The Lancastrian knights take on their Yorkist opposite numbers
Eddie decides he's had enough and wades in.
On the right Oxfords men tangle with Gloucester
Montague joins his bills in an attempt to hold the Lancastrian left
Edward now has forced his way deep in to the Lancastrian centre
Gloucester is wounded but fights on.
The handgunners give ineffective fire
The King's Men at Arms pick on some soft targets
Warwick decides to get on his horse just, you know, to get a better view
The Lancastrian left is driving York back
But Edward has breached the centre and turns in search of Warwick
Oxford is forcing Gloucester back across Boggy Brook (or Bloody Boggy Brook as it is fast becoming)
However the Lancastrian cup runs out of reputation!
Despite success on both flanks...
...it is the centre where the battle has been lost
And Warwick, wisely takes to his horse to flee from an enraged Edward
A great fun game that looked splendid. Not had the War of the Roses toys out since this time last year so it was great to see them all on the table. And now, inevitably I want to paint some more!
The rules seemed to hold up pretty well - though originally designed really for earlier times (and fantasy) they gave a good simulation of the grind of WotR combat and cover the period well.
Excellent...it really looks like a WotR battle!
