Playing 40K with the kids again

Both boys are currently obsessed with Warhammer 40K. So with Mrs Tom's Toy Soldiers away on Saturday doing her PhD the table was erected and the models dug out for some more 40K gaming.
Once again it was to be a three way affair. Thanks to the generoasity of Stephen the eldest boy has taken delivery of some much needed support in the form of a Wave Serpent and a Wraithlord for his Eldar (thanks again Steve!). Meanwhile smallest boy has been repainting some of his Marines to a more consistent Black Templar style.

I was in the middle and they again were plotting to gang up on me.

 Da Orks on the hill

Biel Tan show off their new forces

 Terminators, still awaiting repaint

Marines

 Burna Boys push forward

 'ere we go!

 Da Orks get stuck in

 Dragons and their serpent

Da Boys fall on the Guardians

Big ruck!

The Orks fought their way through most of the Eldar before the wraithlord piled in and gave them a good kicking. Meanwhile the Marines shot the rest of the boys to pieces. Leaving me once again defeated.
It was kind of fun, but as I don't know the rules well and it all involves lots of flipping back and forth it takes quite a time to play.
Its a really curious (and slightly tedious) mix of very simple core mechanics overlaid with endless levels of complexity and variety and contradiction. Fascinating for teenage boys who can hold all this info in their heads. Too much like hard work for me. A game for children, deviants and accountants.
I'd like it if the boys would play each other and I could referee and provide guidance, but they both delight in duffing me up. I expect I'll have to take a few more pastings yet.

  1. "A game for children, deviants and accountants." They should print that on the cover of the book.

  3. I'm sure taking a beating from the kids is good for you as well as for them. That's what I keep on telling myself, anyway.
