Battle of Oppy Wood - Lest We Forget

At 3:45 am on 3rd May 1917 three battalions of the East Yorkshire Regiment - the 10th, 11th and 12th all "Pals" battalions from the city of Hull went into battle in an attack on the heavily fortified woodland near the village of Oppy in France.
The attackers were subjected to murderous artillery and machine gun fire and despite repeated attempts to achieve their objectives they were eventually thrown back with heavy casualties.

The names of the many fallen are recorded on the memorial in Oppy village.

For his heroic single handed attack on a German machine gun 2nd Lieutenant John "Jack" Harrison, Rugby League player for Hull FC was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
