Midgard: Picts v Late Romans

I am rather behind on things, so this game took place over two weeks ago. James and I got together for a little light Midgard using mostly my models (he provided some Romano British commanders). Just a small 300 point game ahead of Partizan.

As I have had many sleeps amd much more besides since we played I'm not really going to attempt to talk through the battle - just show the eye candy in roughly chronological order.

It was a bloody clash - the dual duel of Champions at the start saw both sides lose heroes. The Picts made better progress in the main and eventually punched through the middle but at not inconsiderable costs.
A victory to the hairy northern barbarians!

    1. Yes :)
It's easy to pick up, gives a good flavoursome result in a sensible time and works for multiple armies and periods.
We like it a lot (but then again the author is part of my gaming group!)

  2. Lovely pictures -- I'm a big fan of the Picts and have painted them in both 15's and 28's. I've read a lot of Midgard battle reports in various blogs. Do the rules push you towards the hub-to-hub units in giant lines, slamming together and rolling dice? I would say most of the battle reports seem to be of that type. Just curious...once again, thanks for the AAR!

    1. The rules were designed to represent Dark Age warfare so yes they do tend to have long lines of *shieldwall* type push and shove. I'd say they're pretty accurate for representing the type of warfare of the period. They're *massed battle* rather than skirmish so long lines of men on open plains with occasional cavalry or charity interventions is what I'd expect from these, or other similar rules covering the period.
However you shouldn't overlook the importance of leaders/characters to influence things. Decisive use of "Mighty Deeds" or unfortunate rolls of the "Raven Dice" can have a big impact. It's the Dark Age warfare of the Sagas and stories where heroes are important, so that impacts the clash of the "grunts" in the melee.
